Nana is a very strong and competitive matriarch of the family. Her goal is to win the state chess tournament, and she will do anything to pull that off. It is amazing that an elderly person has the extremely sharp faculties to be competing at all.
However, her real motive is to reunite her two grandsons, who have been estranged for years, by recruiting them both to help on her journey. Nana and the two brothers have fun experiences on their road trips for lower qualifying chess matches which begin to bring them together. In the end, Nana loses the tournament but the three of them celebrate in this heartwarming, unlikely, and always funny comedy.
The Nana Project stars Mercedes Ruehl, Nolan Gould, Will Peltz, Morgan Fairchild, Nicky Whelan, Tony Todd, Christina Moore, Sierra McCormick, Gina Hiraizumi, Katie Sarife, Beth Broderick, Charlene Tilton, and Margaret Avery. The film is directed by Robin Givens and written by Anthony Del Negro and Carl Moellenberg.
Gravitas launched its international sales division in May of 2023. In addition to the previously announced In Flight from director Bo Youngblood (Safe At Home), starring Tiffany Smith (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) and Cristo Fernández (“Ted Lasso”), Gravitas has acquired international sales rights for the comedy The Nana Project, starring Mercedes Ruehl (Fisher King) and Nolan Gould (“Modern Family”), and the sci-fi thriller Tomorrow Before After, starring Natalia Reyes (Terminator: Dark Fate). Gravitas will distribute all three titles in the United States.
Gravitas’ Cannes lineup also includes the Amazon and Freevee Christmas movie EXmas from BuzzFeed Studios, starring Leighton Meester (“Gossip Girl”) and Robbie Amell (“Upload”); the crime thriller Break, from producers Bo Youngblood (Safer at Home) and John Ierardi (Safer at Home); the action film Arena Wars, with Eric Roberts and Michael Madsen; and the horror title Cellphone, with Malcom McDowell.
In Flight is currently in post-production and Gravitas will have a new first-look promo to show during the festival. A fourth-quarter 2024 theatrical release is planned for the film in the United States.
“It has now been a year since we launched our international sales division, and we are so thrilled with the incredible results and growth we have seen,” Danielle Gasher, VP of acquisitions and international sales at Gravitas, said in a statement. “We continue to thrive to raise the bar on the commercial viability of the titles we bring in for both our domestic and worldwide acquisitions. We feel our Cannes 2024 lineup reflects this.”

In Flight, which also stars Maria Russell (Freevee’s “Jury Duty”) and Ashley Jones (“True Blood”), follows Claire, who the night before her trip to Paris, catches the eye of a mysterious, handsome stranger at the bar. It’s the last thing she remembers before waking up on a plane with no recollection of how she got there — and the games begin.
The Nana Project, directed by Robin Givens (The Christmas Clapback) and also starring Will Peltz (Unfriended), Nicky Whelan (The Best Man) Tony Todd (Candyman) and Morgan Fairchild (“Friends”), is set in the competitive world of chess, in which Helen “Nana” Lewis (Ruehl) and her grandsons embark on a heartwarming road trip to support her rise to the state championships.
In Tomorrow Before After, directed by Alfonso Quijada (The Whisper of Silence), set in a post-apocalyptic world that wiped out humanity, a young woman and her dog brave the terrors of the outside world looking for survival and answers as she finds herself unexpectedly pregnant.
In Arena Wars, directed by Brandon Slagle (Break Out) and also starring Robert LaSardo (The Mule), in 2045, prisoners are given the opportunity to compete on the world’s No. 1 televised sporting event. The prisoners must survive seven rooms and seven of the most vicious killers in the country. If they win, they regain their freedom.
In Break, starring Darren Weiss (Inside Man) and Je Kober (Sully) and directed by Will Wernick (Safer at Home, Follow Me, Escape Room), Eli learns his absent father was a Detroit pool hall legend. As he journeys into the scene, he must confront the realities and danger of the game — and himself.
In Cellphone, also starring Whitney Rose Pynn (Aquarius), Wynne, who is grieving the death of her fiancé, starts seeing disturbing images on her cell phone about her future. If she doesn’t figure them out in time, she will die.
“We are very excited about the commercial and cast-driven Cannes lineup we are bringing to international distributors this year,” Gasher said in a statement. “Our goal is for buyers to feel an added level of trust and commitment when they license titles from Gravitas…because in most cases, we are not only representing international territories, but we are also the US distributor for the film.”
